A Dance of Silver and Shadow- Beyond the Four Kingdoms Series, Book 1
This series by Melanie Cellier makes teenage novels from classic fairytale narratives - some more familiar than others. This one, based on 'Twelve Dancing Princesses' has plenty of drama, mystery, action, and a PG-13 prince and princess romance.
Since there are so many princesses (yes, twelve of them) who compete in the mysterious 'Princess Tournament' it was refreshing that they all read as distinct characters. This is likely because each is either the star or a major supporting character of another book in this series.
Princess Liliana is the heroine of this story, and she shares a special gift with her twin sister - they can communicate telepathically. This turns out to be very helpful in the challenges of the Princess Tournament.
These are ideal for younger students who want to read romance stories, but without the mature content of some other YA novels.
